Still here. I've been so terribly lazy and lurgy-ridden about typing up an update, is all. (Okay, and I spent five days in Britain around New Year's, too. Fortunately I got back just before all the snowstorms broke out, and only suffered a fifteen-minute delay on the last flight. Oh, and I suffered boredom at the airports, too. Agh two-hour layovers.)

First off, some long-overdue thanks to my fantastic [ profile] yuletide writer [ profile] lies_d, who is made of win and wrote me a fantastic Eastern Promises fic AND a YTM treat. A treat in a fandom (I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan - I recommend it, it's hilarious) I thought was too small to muster fic. ♥!

[ profile] caras_galadhon and [ profile] cousinshelley also deserve many thanks, because they both wrote me YTM Treats. You rock!

Oh, and now I can reveal which fic I wrote: Bullseyes and Targets, Say the Bells of St Margaret's, the fandom being The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie. (Yes, that Hugh Laurie.) Btw, if you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. It's... well, "comical noir" or "noirish spy-thriller parody" is about as close as I get. Very funny, with many excellent and hilarious turns of phrase.

While on the topic of fic: while I only wrote two fics for holiday exchanges last year, I suddenly realized that I have two older fics that I haven't posted in my own journal, one being a fic written for the [ profile] sons_of_gondor Halloween Exchange and the other being a giftfic. I'll be posting all those later, but I'll try to stagger it so I don't swamp your flist.

And because I can't NOT comment on the weather: like much of Europe, Finland was hit with both chill and snow a few weeks back. The difference being, of course, that we're better equipped to handle it. In late December/early January, we enjoyed temperatures averaging -20° to -25° (where I live, at least. I know the northern areas were even colder.), as well as lots of snow. The snow started falling around Christmas Eve or a little before, and when I left for England on the 29th, we had close to two and a half feet of snow. By contrast, St Albans (where I stayed, with my aunt and her husband) had no snow* and was a balmy 2-3°, and so I was able to enjoy a lovely sauna on New Year's Eve, and also sat in the garden after said sauna bath in nothing but a bathrobe, drinking a g&t. Lovely. It was less lovely to come back to Finland two days later and get welcomed by a snowstorm and -15°. The worst period of chill seems to be over now, though, and it's been around -5° to -10°. (Which feels weird after the deeper chill. I swear, the first day that we had a mere -5°, I went outside to fetch the mail dressed in a teeshirt and felt warm.)

Oh, and last but not least: thanks to [ profile] nieninque121 and [ profile] azewewish (whom I owe totally belated birthday wishes) for the cards! ([ profile] nieninque121, the snowflake arrived mostly safely - a little piece had broken off, though. :( ) Also, note to [ profile] credoimprobus: the gift was WIN. :D It works like a dream. (Stan's currently squished under Logan, who's been getting quite the workout of late. *g*)

*No snow at that time, that is. They did have quite a lot of snow later, but I was back home by then.

I've been silent for the past few days mostly because I've been feeling a bit meh and run-down. I suspect it's just residual holiday stress (you all know how I tend to run myself into the ground) and more looming academic stress, but knowing the probable cause doesn't really take the edge off it.

However, there have been glimmers of light in the othewise stress-filled gloom: I has LotR movie magazines! Thank you so much, [ profile] just_ann_now, you saved my day! :) *hugs*

Oh, and there's been another reason for the silence: my wireless internet has been acting like an absolute bastard for the past few days, and has either been spontaneously disconnecting itself or refusing to connect. Or, rather, refusing any incoming traffic. The usb modem connects like it should, tells me there's either HSDPA or WCDMA coverage with a signal strength of around 95%, but point blank refuses to download anything, so I have to sit staring at the infuriating yellow triangle hovering over the network icon in the taskbar. And this appears to be restricted to my flat. I visited my parents yesterday and hauled the laptop along just to see if the problem persisted in a different location. It didn't. No problems connecting there, but as soon as I got back to my own place and tried to connect, hello zero connectivity. This morning, my intarwebz went down and back up at the drop of a hat. Now it's up, but an hour ago it went down for no reason and stayed down for about fifteen minutes. Argh. Plz to stop right now.

I'm sorry for the lengthy silence. While I've been celebrating Christmas with my family and had my laptop with me, I haven't been online that much. I've mostly been eating, reading, eating, slacking and doing sudokus, eating and watching tv. Oh, and did I mention eating? Ugh.

Now, the traditional holiday fic exchange rundown:
I participated in three holiday exchanges this year: the FaramirFiction Midwinter Swap, [ profile] lotr_sesa and, of course, [ profile] yuletide.

For the Midwinter swap I got a great Boromir/Faramir fic and for [ profile] lotr_sesa [ profile] talullahred wrote me a wonderful Faramir/Beregond fic (yay rare pairing!).

For Yuletide, I got an utterly fantastic Prophecy fic, called Progression of Views. It's just gorgeous, and the writer has nailed both Lucifer's and Gabriel's voices. Lovely.

My own Yuletide fic seemed to go down well with the recipient, but I'd like to take a childish and petulant moment out to pout a little over the lack of attention from others. I know it's only been two days and that the fandom is very small and/or unknown, but it still rankles. Or maybe I'm just grumpy. (I can't help but feel that my failure to include a summary has something to do with this, though I should add that I have been known to grasp at straws in many different situations.)

Oh, and [ profile] azewewish wrote me Boondock Saints fic: Higher Calling. *loves*

Other news:
I still haven't thanked people for the lovely cards I've received. Thank you so much, [ profile] azewewish, [ profile] ribby, [ profile] soawen, [ profile] shalna and [ profile] glenthebunny! And thank you, [ profile] discord26, for the lovely virtual snowglobe!

Speaking of fic: I have a few fics which I just realized I still haven't posted. Hmm. I'll have to do something about that once I get back to my own place and am able to focus once more. (And when I don't have family running about trying to read over my shoulder.)

Finally getting around to squeeing over various things. *g*

First off, the [ profile] yuletide version: Eee, I got BDS fic! It's called Tarot Reading and it's got devious Smecker and twin snark and I like it a lot. :) Oh, and some lovely person wrote me a Silas ficlet as a Yuletide treat! I've never had anyone write me a treat before, so I'm quite thrilled. (I got Split Second fic two years ago, but that was a NYR fic.)

More fic squee: [ profile] blackbird_song wrote me Boromir/Faramir fic for the [ profile] lotr_sesa challenge, and you should go read it, because it's beautiful.

Then, there's card squee: thank you for the cards, [ profile] sharpiefan (ships! Yay!) and [ profile] ribby!

Celeb squee: Ian McKellen's now a Companion of Honour. He deserves it, the darling.

And lastly, some gift squee. This one needs a bit of backstory, so here goes: my favourite bag by far is my trusty Fjällräven Kånken. I use it every day, and it's always rammed full of stuff (books, groceries, clothes... usually to the point of bursting). The current one had served me for almost 11(!) years, and had been through snowstorms, pouring rain, sleet, baking sunshine and almost all other weather, and was beginning to look rather worn. The zippers were giving up, there were minor tears and the weatherproofing was a mere memory.

Last Saturday, when I was shopping for the last Christmas gifts, the mid-bottom seam on the backpack gave up. Thankfully, the fabric overlaps, so I got my stuff home without incident, but I vowed to get myself a new bag during the sales this week. (They're a bit pricy, but worth it.) I visited one of the sports goods stores immediately after I noticed the tear, but I didn't find any Kånken backpacks and I was too tired to search more methodically, so I gave up. Thank heavens I did, because when Christmas Eve rolled around and the gifts were opened, it turned out that my mother had foreseen the malfunction and bought me a new Kånken. :D There was much squeeing, let me tell you. (The hilarious bit is that she bought it two days before my old one broke. Mothers are psychic, I tell you.)

Christmas is here, whee! Even though my timing screwed up totally, meaning I sat writing challenge fic until half past four in the morning, I'm feeling calm and nearly rested. (This despite the fact that I slept four hours. Don't ask me how my body does it.)

However, I have most of my stuff packed and ready (I'll be spending Christmas with my parents), and I have freshly-brewed espresso and freshly-baked cookies with white chocolate and orange peel, so life is good.

Oh, and no holiday post is complete without thanks. *g* Thank you for the cards, [ profile] soawen, [ profile] a_belladonna, [ profile] abby_normal and [ profile] estelanui, and thank you for the virtual snowglobe, [ profile] discord26! *hugs all around* [ profile] blackbird_song, I'll print my [ profile] lotr_sesa gift fic out and read it later this evening, when all the Christmas Eve fuss is over. I'll even try to get a comment in, provided I can get at the computer and get online for a bit. For now, know that I love you lots for writing that pairing for me. :)

And *hugs* to all of my Flist! You're all wonderful, and I love reading about your lives.

Also: Dear [ profile] yuletide writer, I'll be away and internetless when the stories are posted, and won't be back until the 27th, which means I won't be able to read my gift fic immediately. I'll read and feedback as soon as I can, I promise!

Okay, now my sister keeps poking at me and punching me in the shoulder and saying we need to leave now, so I guess it's time to go.

If you email me, I I can send you a card, but it'll be a New Year's one. :/ I fail at keeping my address book updated, I really do, and I fail at being on time with things.) Hopefully most of my cards will reach people in time for the holidays.

And thank you to [ profile] littlemimm and [ profile] tackerama for sending me cards from work. *g* (The card is coming from inside the Post Office!)

Brits on the Flist, can I ask an odd favour? Could you point me in the direction of some traditional British Christmas recipes? My uncle-by-marriage, who's a Brit, is coming over to Finland for Christmas, and I'd love to surprise him with something familiar to him.

The instructions for this analgesic gel kill me: "Wait at least two minutes before touching the treated area with your tongue in order to allow a protective film to form." Err, the treated area is ON my tongue. Also, do you have any idea how much saliva forms when you sit with your mouth open for two minutes, literally holding your tongue to stop it from chafing against your teeth? A lot. I drooled like I'd just seen Sean Bean parade by stark bollock naked.

And in happier news: Thank you for the cards, [ profile] azewewish and [ profile] cruisedirector! *hugs*

And thank you to [ profile] kenazfiction for the movie trivia!

In other news: I feel like kicking myself for being too scatter-brained to nominate fandoms for Yuletide, because there are at least two that I would have loved to see. Agh. Does anyone know if there's any Les Rivières Pourpres (Crimson Rivers) fic out there, preferably Niemans/Kerkerian? I watched the movie yesterday (both of them, actually, though Kerkerian isn't in the sequel), and I crave fic. *puppy eyes* Anyone? Even Niemans/Reda would do.

*collapses* Finally finished the challenge fic, with minutes to spare. I'm never writing that pairing again, I swear. I should have known to add said pairing to the "Will not write" part of the sign-up form but no, I didn't even think anyone would request it. Silly me. I should have remembered that I always manage to get assigned the oddest prompts or pairings.

And now I'm off to [ profile] tackerama's place to spend Midsummer with her and [ profile] littlemimm. I have cider and chocolate and I intend to use both. I also intend to take some pictures to show you that Finland isn't called the land of the midnight sun for nothing. Okay, we don't have sun all through the night like in Lapland, but today the day is 20 hours and 23 minutes long where I live, which I think counts for something. There's neither dawn nor dusk during this time of year, only a very short night. (Compare this to the three or four hours of daylight we have in midwinter. Yeah. We have a few issues about moderation when it comes to day length. Comes with living so close to the North Pole. *g*)

Have a lovely Midsummer, all of you!

Right, finally getting around to answering the questions asked in the Flist poll post a few months back. Oops.

ribby: What got you into translation? And are you planning on a career as a translator? )

ashinae: No-holds-barred fight: Sharpe & Boromir. Who wins? )

littlemimm: O rly? )

Firstly: Happy belated birthday to two wonderful ladies: [ profile] ribby and [ profile] ashinae, and happy timely birthday to [ profile] abby_normal and [ profile] kmanderson!

Yesterday was spent celebrating [ profile] tackerama's 30th birthday, and it was glorious fun. Delicious cake, good company and much laughter. We ([ profile] tackerama, [ profile] littlemimm, T's close friend K (the token male) and I) headed to the local Irish pub at ten-ish and left at two, even though we'd only intended to drop in for a pint or two. (Well, none of us had more than two pints, so at least we stuck to part of the idea. *g*) Drinks-wise, I went with Guinness, which is lovely, but even lovelier when combined with weird and cracky conversation and lewd and rather vocal commentary on other bar patrons. We also slashed random pretty people left and right and laughed at sad come-on attempts.

After leaving the pub, we decided to stop for pizza (which rarely tastes as good as when eaten while slightly drunk at three in the morning), which proved to be a good idea, since I was ravenous. I hadn't eaten properly since the morning, as I'd worked full shift before heading over to T's place.

All in all, it was a great day. :) I think I came home at a bit past three and promptly fell into bed, falling asleep almost before my head hit the pillow.
I'm sitting here staring at my screen, trying to will several ficlets to work, and I seem to have got stuck. So, I mused, what can I do to come unstuck? Ah yes, I'll ask my Flist.

So: Do you have specific music/pictures/rituals that help you write*? Share it with me. It can be smutty music or a tearjerking track, porn or classical art, a specific blend of tea or a writing exercise. What gets you and your muses going?

Feel free to upload stuff or point me to it.

*I'm not just talking about writing slash here. I mean writing in general, be it fanfic or original fiction, drabbles or novels. :)
This is the funniest thing I've read all week. (Found via Flist.) I literally laughed so hard I cried.

The degree of amusement may, however, be directly related to how exhausted I am. Six hours of teaching = argh.

Also: is it just me, or have I really been spamming the Flist of late?
Who's responsible for the box of chocolates on my userinfo page? Come on, 'fess up. I want to heap love on you!

Happy arbitrary consumerist manipulation in the name of 'romance' day, you lot!

I love you all. :)

Ack, I've been meaning to make this post for ages, but always gotten sidetracked. The computer's still mostly b0rked (for some reason my own computer rejects the old drive, even as a slave, despite it working well with other motherboards), and it's driving me up the wall. The old drive was 120gb, and right now I'm stuck with a 40gb drive. Argh!

However, the main point of this post was rather more cheery: Thank you so much for the cards, [ profile] shalna, [ profile] cruisedirector, [ profile] savageseraph, [ profile] idiosyncratic, [ profile] faramir_boromir, [ profile] ribby, and [ profile] nienique121! *squishy hugs all around* Your cards arrived at varying times between Christmas and New Year's, with a few showing up at the very beginning of this month, and they all made me squee and flail and feel very lucky to have such lovely friends. Thanks also to [ profile] estelanui, who sent me several e-cards which all warmed my heart. :)

My own cards... well. Er. Mostly done, but unsent still. Yes, I seem to be made of something resembling fail. *hides* I will get them out, though. Promise. They'll be vague-winter cards rather than holiday ones, but who says you can't be a little delayed unconventional sometimes?

Oh, and I've been meaning to mention this: my favourite new toy is the usb hub/mug warmer my sister got me for Christmas. It's such a wonderfully weird piece of frivolous-yet-useful technology.
It's technically past Christmas here (as we celebrate on the 24th), but only by about fifteen minutes, so... ;)

Merry midwinter to all of you! I love you all.

Also: thank you so much for the bundle of gifts, [ profile] discord26! My userinfo looks much more festive now. :)
Just a quick post to prove that I'm alive. I'm horribly tired, and I just cancelled the sign-up for the two exams I had scheduled for the 16th and the 19th. I have too much on my to-do list right now (including four challenge fics, one of which is really late, ack), and there'll be retakes in the spring anyway.

Now for something a bit more positive: Thank you for the lovely cards, [ profile] azewewish, [ profile] quatorze, [ profile] soawen (the ornament was lovely!), [ profile] tvillingar and [ profile] ios_pillow_book!

My own cards will probably be a bit late (surprise!), but I'll try to get them out this week.
