Fic writing meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon:

Out of curiosity, if I was chained up in your attic/study/basement/library/secret lair, and I had to write you one story, what would you ask for? Or alternately, what's something you always hoped I'd write but think isn't likely to happen?

Surprise me. :)

I seem to have signed up for [livejournal.com profile] kink_bingo (now running over on Dreamwidth). Oops? I'm mostly okay with the kinks I was dealt, and if pushed I think I could theoretically, since I write slower than a glacier moves and trip myself up by demanding everything be perfect start to finish on the first go write all of them save for one that's a squick of mine. I've been salivating over certain kinks on the cards of those Flisters who are taking part, but I think it's part of the thing: you always want the kinks you weren't dealt, right? *g*

Without further ado: my card )

So, who else is playing?

Dear person or persons unknown* who replied to my thread on the Fictional Love meme: I love you lots, in many sticky ways. Reading the comments made me giggle like a loon and make embarrassing little squealing noises.

That's all for now. *g*

And now for the new meme: here's my thread on the Fictional Love meme. Drop a comment there if you want, but don't feel like you have to. :)

Yes, this is me, late to the Cliff, Shag, Marry meme that did the rounds last week. (In my defense, I was hit by the worst stomach flu I've ever had on Monday, and am still a bit wobbly.) I'm giving this a shot, even though I know I'm clinically unable to make swift decisions.

I was given the following three by [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon and promptly decided to cheat like a cheating little thing:
- Eowyn
- Nightcrawler
- Lucifer

Cliff: A second Fall fall for dear Lucifer, I fear. Yes, he might be a mind-blowing shag, but honestly, he's also evil incarnate. I'd still take the time for a very long and thorough farewell shag, even though I'd be afraid he'd suck my soul out mid-coitus or set the bed on fire. And honestly, you never quite know if he's going to decide he really wants a tasty myocardial morsel and rip your heart out of your chest. So, that considered, off the cliff he goes.

Shag: I want to shag all three, but that's not the question, is it? *g* Nightcrawler. It's for entirely shallow reasons, since he is handsome, an acrobat (so bendy) and also extremely talented with his tail the spade of which I've seen described as 'nimble as a third hand'. The reason I'd just shag him rather than marry him is that in the end, it just wouldn't work. He's (in most canons) a devout Catholic with strong faith while I'm an atheist. I wouldn't cliff him for it, though, so the shag option is the most mutually beneficial.

Marry: ooh, this was a tricky one. It's a toss-up between Eowyn and Nightcrawler, since Lucifer's... well, he's Lucifer. Let's start with that. Hardly the best of foundations on which to build a marriage. So, down to two.
My final choice is Eowyn. She's strong, she's fearless and she can think for herself. And she's gorgeous. (See? I told you I was shallow.) Granted, she's also somewhat stubborn and given to falling for the wrong people, but those are hardly the worst traits a spouse could have. (And if she tried any of that nonsense about hanging up her shield, I'd do my damnedest to talk her out of it. I like her best when she kicks ass and takes names. *g*) Plus I suspect I have more in common with her than I have with Nightcrawler and muahaha, marriage doesn't rule out shagging.

And I promise to stop abusing the strikethrough tag now.

Now, in a friendly and possibly teasing way, point out the obvious and not so obvious trends or fetishes you see in my tastes. Maybe I'm nuts for all vampire stories, or have a thing for men in glasses, or I'm fond of kick-ass women, or scary-ass geeks. Let's point out all of those you've noticed I tend to squee about during our friendship.

I know I owe people challenge ficlets and request fics (some from years back *cringe*), but I couldn't resist this one. It'll give me something to think about at work when I'm bored.

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

All my fics are fair game and can be found in this journal. Go here for all entries tagged 'fic'.

Yes, this post is all kinds of random. :) I originally intended to write an insightful entry on the local Arts Night, which was yesterday, but as I sat down to type, I realized I didn't have anything intelligent to say. I'll mention one thing about it, though, because I promised [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus I would: as we were walking towards the city library, we spotted something that looked disconcertingly much like a huge tuft of hair sticking to the exhaust pipe of one of the cars parked along the street. I'm not kidding. It looked like a fistful of light brown/ash coloured hair, and it was stuck to the chassis of the car, somewhere between the left suspension of the rear axle and the exhaust pipe. I haven't the faintest clue as to a) what it was and b) how it had got there. It might be fake, and probably was, but my first reaction (and Ryen's, no doubt) was "WTF?".

Today's random link: Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Metallica. Omg. So brilliant it hurts. There are a few short samples on the site, and they're hysterical.
Oh, and there's more of them here. They've got Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, The Pixies and Tool as well, plus a few others. "Get 'em while they're young", right?

Because no random post is truly random without the addition of a meme, I present the book meme. (I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] littlemimm.)Cut because it's long and boring. )

And lastly, before I forget: [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse, you liked Edelfelt's "Virginie", right? I snagged a local art gallery poster (50x70cm) with it, and it's yours if you want it. :)

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.

It can be anything you want -- good or bad -- BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your LJ and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you.
(If you've done this meme and I've missed it, feel free to include a link to the entry in your comment.)

Grah. I can't understand why I'm so tired all the time. Granted, the morning shift times are a bit brutal, but it shouldn't be this bad. (On the other hand, as [livejournal.com profile] littlemimm pointed out, going directly from thesis course to morning shift isn't the same thing as relaxing.)

Anyways, the real point of this post wasn't to whine about my fatigue, but to post pictures as requested in the picture meme.

Some completely random and unconnected ramblings for your viewing pleasure. :)

No one's confessed to buying the balloons that adorn my userinfo. *scrutinizes Flist* Is it one of you or do I have a secret admirer?

I've been sniggering at the student restaurant menu all week, and I thought I'd post a few gems:
* "Chicken balls". A classic.
* "Scrimp salad". So it's very frugal, then?
* and lastly, the rather wtf "feta and mustard pie", which, if you looked at the Swedish version, turned out to be feta and spinach. I think someone got their spinach ('spenat' in Swedish) and their mustard ('senap') mixed up.

Will answer comments after work tomorrow, promise. I'm too tired right now, and suspect I will crash directly after tonight's episode of 30 Days. Yes, at nine in the evening. I have no life. (I blame work. I'm not used to getting up at half past four to be at work at six in the morning, and my body is fighting me every step of the way.)

I seem to have been friended by a few people. *waves* Hi, I'm afraid I'm a little boring right now, but I hope things will get a bit better in July. If there's anything you want to ask me, just leave a comment.

Oh sod it, a random entry just isn't a random entry without a meme: Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in/curious about - it can be anything from the house I live in to my favourite shoes. Leave your choice here as a comment, and I will reciprocate by taking the pictures and posting them as an LJ entry. (EtA: Ganked this one off [livejournal.com profile] annmarwalk, not [personal profile] snowgrouse. I think. Head a bit difficult right now.)

I've missed two B2MeM posts already, so I have some catching up to do. No fic yet, I'm afraid. I can't seem to finish anything, bleh.

Earlier this evening, I was puzzling over what to have for dinner. I was all out of ideas, so I went hunting for a cookbook and in the process, I came across a printed-out recipe for some variant of lembas. This got me thinking about the food culture of Middle-earth.

We all know that Hobbits are the ones who delight in food and ale, and that Elves seem to live on lembas and light*, but what about the rest? There are cursory mentions of Gondorian and Rohirric food, but in both of these cases, it is made clear that the food consists of wartime rations, not average food. In other cases, there is only mention of a meal, but not of the specifics. The only thing we know of the farewell meal in Meduseld is that wine was taken. What food is described in more detail is the food a moving troop: "pale yellow wine, cool and fragrant, [...] bread and butter, and salted meats, and dried fruits, and good red cheese,".

The food Pippin is offered in Minas Tirith is likewise sparse: the white cakes (sweet or savoury? Do they serve ritual purpose?) and wine he takes at the audience with Denethor, and the light breakfast of bread, cheese and apples that Beregond brings.

There is a frustrating dearth of detail here. Yes, we know that they eat, but we're not told what they eat when they sit down and dine. All we are shown are simple meals taken to stave off the worst hunger. The men (and most likely the women as well) of Gondor are tall and strong, and you can't stay that way unless you eat properly. Ditto for the Rohirrim or the Haradrim. An army marches on its stomach, and light meals make for a light and weak army. I'm not saying Faramir should have dragged a cook with him, or that the eoreds hosted cook-outs each night as they rode across the wold, but that I find it hard to believe that there were no cooked meals had during the War of the Ring.

What do you think? Did Gondor's soldiers and Rohan's riders dine like kings or just chuck a coney in a pot with some vegetables when there was time?

As for times of peace: are there any dishes that you think would be typically Gondorian, Rohirric, Haradric or Numenorean? I think the Numenoreans would have had plenty of fish, as would the people of Dol Amroth and other coastal cities. The Haradric diet might have been rich in meat. And Gondor? I think I need to ponder that one a bit more.

I'd love to hear what people think, so feel free to pimp the post. If you have recipes you think fit the theme, post away. :)

*Before you tell me off, I'd like to point out that I'm aware that the Elves do eat regular food as well. There are several mentions of this: Gildor and his company offer the Hobbits food, there is a feast in Rivendell, and I'm sure the Fellowship were served heartier food than lembas while they were in Lothlorien. The reason I did not go into that was that I was interested in the food culture of Men.

You know you've been thinking about slash a bit too much when you assume that a word ending in -ize most likely is "sodomize". *facepalm*

The obligatory meme:
(Ganked this off [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse.)
1. Reply with your name and I'll tell you something about you.
2. I'll tell you which band/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll think of a common interest we share.
4. I'll tell you what I envy/admire in you.
5. I'll tell you my first memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal reminds me of you.
7. I'll ask you something I've wanted to ask you for some time.
8. Putting this in your lj too would be nice if I've done it for you, but by no means compulsory.

I've noticed people squeeing over the cowboys on ice vid, and as the copy I snagged off Smart Bitches, Trashy Books (that is, before they ran out of bandwidth and took it down) seems to be slightly better quality than the one on Youtube, I've uploaded it to Megaupload. Link here. Because you can never have too many slashy cowboys on ice. ;)

Back to playing catch-up with comments now. (No, I'm not trying to avoid working on assignments that need to be finished. I'm just... ah, taking a creative break.)

I did the Enneagram meme that's been floating around the Flist (I think I gacked the link off [livejournal.com profile] savageseraph), and I turned out to be a One.

So, what does that mean? )

It's scarily accurate, particularly the childhood part. I did all that, and I still do. However, I can't claim to be self-disciplined when it comes to everything. Sure, I can deny myself something I don't think I'm worthy of, but if we're talking about, say, academic discipline, then I'm your average burner of the midnight oil. Essays get written in the last desperate hours before deadline, not on time. (Okay, this I will admit: I'm so hard on myself when it comes to grades it isn't even funny.) Oh, and for me it isn't "I do everything the right way", it's "I have to do everything the right way or I'm a failure". Perfectionist? Yes.

(Also: in a fit of perfectionism, I edited the layout of the result. Eh.)
