So. I suppose I should be making a reveal post re: [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. I've been offline for most of the week after Christmas, hence the silence. I only wrote one fic for Yuletide, because my muses wouldn't cooperate enough for me to manage any Treats. (That, and I was online only sporadically during Christmas, too.)

The fic I wrote is A Way Out (American Gods), for [personal profile] d_generate_girl. I like how it turned out, even though I hadn't intended to go with that part of the prompt at first. At some point, the story just got me in a headlock and dragged me off, and all I could do was go with it. I ended up doing such weird research for it (most of which didn't end up in the fic), and along the way, I was fortunate enough to encounter some wonderful coincidences. And I got to splash about in Norse mythology again, which was great. (I think one of the weirder impulses I got during the writing was to seek out Peter Madsen's fantastic Valhalla series again. I grew up reading them and loved the stories and the artwork.) What was interesting was that another writer also did a take on the same part of the prompt, and that one was very different: Making a Plan by vocal_bard . Go read that one too, it's great.

I'll post the YT fic here a bit later, but in the meantime, you can read the fic here (please note that the fic contains material that can be triggery - it deals with suicide).

The fic I received was the wonderful Animals (District 9) by [livejournal.com profile] floranna, and I suggest you go read it now. I really like the way it lets us have a look at Christopher's life pre-movie, and how he ended up being a single father. (Also, what are the odds that I end up with a Finnish writer? *g*)

I also received a YT Treat: a lovely introspective Nikolai/Kirill piece - Skin Deep (Eastern Promises) by [livejournal.com profile] cousinshelley.

And because no holiday season is complete without [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa, I also wrote LotR fic (and dear god, I just remembered I never posted my [livejournal.com profile] sons_of_gondor Halloween fic over here in my journal *facepalm*). In that challenge, [livejournal.com profile] erfan_starled wrote Explorers, Past and Present for me. Yay for Glorfindel/Celeborn fic! The masterlist for that challenge is here.
First off, the important stuff: Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] littlemimm!
(And my profuse apologies to all the people whose birthdays I have missed. :/ Damn you, LJ, bring back the birthday reminders.)

In other, more random news:

- I've totally forgot to post the fic I wrote for the 2010 [livejournal.com profile] sons_of_gondor Trick or Treat exchange. And related to that: go read the fic that [livejournal.com profile] afra_schatz wrote for me: Incessant (Bean/Marton and tattoos, oh my) because it's made of win.

- Many, many thanks to the person or persons unknown for the [livejournal.com profile] mome_awards nominations! I'm very flattered. :)

- Oh gah, it's that time of the year again. I need to tackle the Yuletide Signup Form Of DOOM posthaste, but I can't even figure out what to offer, let alone what to ask for. Halp.

- I'm far too amused by the fact that the hotel I'll be staying at during a course-related thingy this week is called Hotel Arthur. I'm completely serious. That's the name. Hopefully the staircases are paradox-free, and hopefully the gravity stays normal.

- I know I've forgot to mention something, but I can't figure out what it is. Oh well, that's what EtAs are for.

LotR SeSa 2010: Signups Now Open--

Greetings from your friendly neighbourhood elves! (Hopefully of the Tolkien variety rather than the tiny and twee North Pole type. ^_~) Once again, [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon and myself are returning to help [livejournal.com profile] shirasade run [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa.

So it's that time of the year again; time to sign up for the Lord of the Rings Secret Santa exchange! Slash, het and gen, fic and fanart; you can request it all, so why not join in? Sign-ups will run from now until October 31st.

The signup post is HERE.

Previous years' stories can be found, as usual, via the website or the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa community.

Please note that this is an FPF challenge. (i.e. Fictional, not real people fiction/RPF.)

The Rules (2010):
    1. Your story (or fanart) is due December 17th and will go online December 24th -- please post it to the community (and nowhere else, until January 1st) and we will make it public on Christmas Eve.

    2. Naturally, it'd be better if you didn't talk too much about your story beforehand in places where your recipient could see it. Also, as a matter of fairness, please make your story more than 500 words (1000 is better). For fanart we'd expect you to spend at least a couple of hours on your work.

    3. Please only sign up if you plan on actually fulfilling your end of the bargain. If you're going to be late, please let us know so we can inform your recipient of the delay. If you can't make it, it'd be awesome if you could find someone else to write your story. In addition, there will be a pool of emergency replacement writers, so that everyone who signs up gets their gift.

    4. Signing up: Please comment on this post (all comments are screened) or email [caras_galadhon AT livejournal.com] until October 31st with the following information (especially your email address for your assignment). That should be it. You will get your assignment in early November, if possible before November 8th, giving you approximately six weeks to finish your assignment. We realize that it's not possible that everyone gets to write their OTP, but we'll do our best to make sure you don't have to write something that squicks you, so be sure to let us know your preferences.Have fun -- and spread the word!

The Yuletide Fandom Nominations are open. (TBH, I don't know if I'll nominate any. The ones I might think of will either a) get nominated by umpty other people or b) be too intimidating* for me to write in. Or c) both.)

Omg, the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide signups are open. *glee* Time to start wibbling over which fandoms to offer and what to request, plus agonize over how many fandoms I've never even heard of and how few fandoms I can offer.

Oh great, another timesink. *g* I have so much I need to be getting on with, but come on, this is Yuletide, people.

Btw, am I the only one not getting any comment notifications? At first I thought I'd accidentally disabled comment emailing on a recent challenge post (I thought no one had bothered to comment, but it turns out I just wasn't getting notifications), but despite enabling comment tracking, I'm still not getting any notifications. Wtf, LJ?

True to form, I'm still working on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic, even though deadline is practically screaming me in the face.

Did I mention I was up until four last night finishing another challenge fic? Because I was.

I owe lots of people comments, too. *sigh*

And now the random bit: I swear, my subconscious throws up the oddest things sometimes. Last night, I dreamt I was attending a seminar held in a pastel-hued cafe or fast food place. The teacher? Daniel Craig. o_O The group was big, and we were apparently tasked with analysing ragged ad posters pasted onto a brick wall outside a shabby corner shop (which I think was in New York, but I'm not sure.) I even remember some of the ads, because I stood explaining them to my study partner: one for Kool cigarettes, and a black and yellow one advertising a seminar on murder. (It made sense at the time.)

Back at the seminar, I argued with my new partner, who was a friend I haven't seen in years. At one point, our teacher (still Daniel Craig) walked up to the desk where I was sitting, said "You're clearly not making any progress, so I'll take your coffee" and took the mug I was holding. (Oddly, it was a favourite mug of mine.) He then turned and and walked away, and that was when I realized that: a) his hair was wet, like he'd just had a shower, and b) he was only wearing a pale blue evening shirt, which left his legs and a tiny sliver of his buttocks visible. My first reaction was to give him the finger, but I caught myself and calmly noted "I won't do that, because he'd just turn and catch me at it". I may have sassed at him in the dream as well.

I have no idea where that came from. Well, apart from the seminar thing, which probably had to do with the fact that I'd planned to see my thesis supervisor today and ask about the extended farce that the supervision of my work has turned into. (I went to see her, told her I wasn't getting anywhere since the advice I was getting from her was contradictory, and I think I got things cleared up a bit. I also managed to sneak in a few barbs coated in sweet phrasing, and I frankly don't care if she caught them or not.)

I also had a second dream (which means I must have woken up at some point), about being in a dark gift shop in Edinburgh, looking for a specific kind of necklace with feathers and blades (wtf), all while being a bit rushed, since I had to be on time to go see Iron Man with a bloke I know IRL and dislike intensely. I disliked him in the dream, too, but I was still rushed. I kept getting sidetracked, once by a grizzled long-haired rocker who wanted to show off a bondage swing made from thin strips of black leather decorated with glass beads, and several times by (adorable) members of staff who wanted to flirt with me. Oh, and I had to find a specific kind of tea in a particular tin, and couldn't. I suddenly noticed I was late, ran out of the store and went tearing down a steep stone staircase toward a back street that I knew was Hill Place. Never mind the fact that there are no stone steps leading down anywhere on Hill Place, unless you count the front steps of the buildings, none of which are that steep. I woke up before I'd reached the end of the stairs. No idea what that was about, either. I rarely remember my dreams (sadly), but when I do, they tend to be rather bizarre. (Not that I am complaining about the half-naked Daniel Craig, oh no.)

In other news: O NOES [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and the other challenges I'm participating in. *deep breath* I can do this. I've done it before, I can do it now.

Finally getting around to squeeing over various things. *g*

First off, the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide version: Eee, I got BDS fic! It's called Tarot Reading and it's got devious Smecker and twin snark and I like it a lot. :) Oh, and some lovely person wrote me a Silas ficlet as a Yuletide treat! I've never had anyone write me a treat before, so I'm quite thrilled. (I got Split Second fic two years ago, but that was a NYR fic.)

More fic squee: [livejournal.com profile] blackbird_song wrote me Boromir/Faramir fic for the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa challenge, and you should go read it, because it's beautiful.

Then, there's card squee: thank you for the cards, [livejournal.com profile] sharpiefan (ships! Yay!) and [livejournal.com profile] ribby!

Celeb squee: Ian McKellen's now a Companion of Honour. He deserves it, the darling.

And lastly, some gift squee. This one needs a bit of backstory, so here goes: my favourite bag by far is my trusty Fjällräven Kånken. I use it every day, and it's always rammed full of stuff (books, groceries, clothes... usually to the point of bursting). The current one had served me for almost 11(!) years, and had been through snowstorms, pouring rain, sleet, baking sunshine and almost all other weather, and was beginning to look rather worn. The zippers were giving up, there were minor tears and the weatherproofing was a mere memory.

Last Saturday, when I was shopping for the last Christmas gifts, the mid-bottom seam on the backpack gave up. Thankfully, the fabric overlaps, so I got my stuff home without incident, but I vowed to get myself a new bag during the sales this week. (They're a bit pricy, but worth it.) I visited one of the sports goods stores immediately after I noticed the tear, but I didn't find any Kånken backpacks and I was too tired to search more methodically, so I gave up. Thank heavens I did, because when Christmas Eve rolled around and the gifts were opened, it turned out that my mother had foreseen the malfunction and bought me a new Kånken. :D There was much squeeing, let me tell you. (The hilarious bit is that she bought it two days before my old one broke. Mothers are psychic, I tell you.)

Christmas is here, whee! Even though my timing screwed up totally, meaning I sat writing challenge fic until half past four in the morning, I'm feeling calm and nearly rested. (This despite the fact that I slept four hours. Don't ask me how my body does it.)

However, I have most of my stuff packed and ready (I'll be spending Christmas with my parents), and I have freshly-brewed espresso and freshly-baked cookies with white chocolate and orange peel, so life is good.

Oh, and no holiday post is complete without thanks. *g* Thank you for the cards, [livejournal.com profile] soawen, [livejournal.com profile] a_belladonna, [livejournal.com profile] abby_normal and [livejournal.com profile] estelanui, and thank you for the virtual snowglobe, [livejournal.com profile] discord26! *hugs all around* [livejournal.com profile] blackbird_song, I'll print my [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa gift fic out and read it later this evening, when all the Christmas Eve fuss is over. I'll even try to get a comment in, provided I can get at the computer and get online for a bit. For now, know that I love you lots for writing that pairing for me. :)

And *hugs* to all of my Flist! You're all wonderful, and I love reading about your lives.

Also: Dear [livejournal.com profile] yuletide writer, I'll be away and internetless when the stories are posted, and won't be back until the 27th, which means I won't be able to read my gift fic immediately. I'll read and feedback as soon as I can, I promise!

Okay, now my sister keeps poking at me and punching me in the shoulder and saying we need to leave now, so I guess it's time to go.
I'm posting this here as well, for posterity.
