Greetings from your friendly neighbourhood elves! (Hopefully of the Tolkien variety rather than the tiny and twee North Pole type. ^_~)

So, it's that time of the year again: time to sign up for the Lord of the Rings Secret Santa exchange! Slash, femslash, het and gen, fic and fanart; you can request it all, so why not join in? Sign-ups will run from now until November 15th.

Previous years' stories and art can be found, as usual, via the website or on the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa community.

Please note that this is an FPF challenge. (i.e. Fictional, not real people fiction/RPF.)

We're always open to all the Peoples and Ages of Middle-earth, which means that characters from The Hobbit are welcome too!

The Rules (2016):

1. Your story (or fanart) is due December 17th 11:59 pm Pacific Time (you can check what that is in your time zone here) and will go online December 24th -- please post it to the community (and nowhere else, until January 1st) and we will make it public on Christmas Eve.

2. Naturally, it'd be better if you didn't talk too much about your fic/art beforehand in places where your recipient could see it. Also, as a matter of fairness, please make your story more than 500 words (1000 is better). For fanart we'd expect you to spend at least a couple of hours on your work.

3. Please only sign up if you plan on actually fulfilling your end of the bargain. If you're going to be late or cannot complete your assignment, please let us know so we can discuss alternate arrangements. In addition, there will be a pool of emergency replacement writers/artists, so that everyone who signs up gets their gift.

4. Signing up: the sign up form can be found here (or here if the main link gives you an error message). If you need help with signing up, please don't hesitate to contact the mods.

5. This year's timeline (2016):

- Signups: November 4th to 15th.

- Assignments sent out: On or near November 16th.

- Assignments due: December 17th.

- Stories/art revealed: December 24th.

- Author/artist names revealed: January 1st.

6. When you're done, please add your story/art to the collection on AO3. All gifts will be revealed on December 24th.

That should be it. Assignments will be sent out shortly after signups close, hopefully on or very shortly after November 16th, giving you approximately four and a half weeks to finish your assignment. We realize that it's not possible that everyone gets to write their OTP, but we'll do our best to make sure you don't have to write something that squicks you, so be sure to let us know your preferences.

Have fun -- and spread the word!

Note II: This is the picture that spawned this: http://bit.ly/1kYu2Cy . I mentioned that Hux's boots were very shiny, and she noted it looked like /someone/ was keeping them well-polished. And then this happened. (No, I have no idea either.)

I haven't updated this journal in ages. Well, there's been the occasional fic post, but they don't really count.

In the past year and a half, I've become an aunt, lost a beloved grandparent, met the amazing [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon (whom I've known online for 14(!) years), [livejournal.com profile] brodeurbunny30 and [livejournal.com profile] ashinae in RL for the first time, been to Canada (albeit very briefly, before I headed to NZ together with [livejournal.com profile] brodeurbunny30 and [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon), been There and Back Again to New Zealand (where I traipsed around on LotR/Hobbit filming sites for 14 days and attended a midnight screening of BoFA in full Elf costume (Tauriel with a dash of Generic Elf Scout) as part of a Red Carpet Tours package) and attended my first ever con (HobbitCon 3 in Germany).

A few years ago, I would have made looong posts about it all (because OMFG walking on the Pelennor and walking into Mordor and seeing the Shire and visiting the Weta workshop and being at a con all on my own and meeting Mark Ferguson and Graham McTavish and Ken Stott and and and). Now? I meant to mention it at least, but didn't. And the longer I put it off, the more foolish it seemed to even write anything about it.

I'm still here, though. I may not comment much, but I'm still here. And still co-modding [livejournal.com profile] middleearthnews and [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa. :)
It seems I accidentally Crimson Peak fic. (Though it won't be a surprise to those who know how I roll with certain kinks. *g*)

Note: A very, very big thank you to the ever-amazing [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon for the beta and the encouragement. ♥

Also available on AO3, if you'd rather read it there.

Note: originally begun as a prompt fill for the Hobbit kinkmeme, but it went a bit sideways from that.
Thanks: Dedicated to the stellar [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon, who tirelessly cheered me on and provided both advice and beta. I couldn't have finished this without her help. ♥ (She also deserves thanks for not throwing her hands up in disgust and telling me I was a terrible perv writing utter filth. *g*)

Note: this is a mix of bookverse and movieverse, which I hope won't be too confusing.
Note 2: Written for [livejournal.com profile] lynndyre for the 2014 round of [livejournal.com profile] lotr_sesa.

Below is a drabble I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon after one of our many strange conversations. She demanded asked me nicely to post it, so here it is. :) Be warned, it's all crack. (If you prefer to read/comment over on AO3, you can find the drabble here.)

Reading very old fics is like reading your old diary: occasionally embarrassing but also occasionally uplifting. At least for me. For every "Oh god, the prose in this is veering toward imperial purple" there's a quiet "wow, that was a really nice turn of phrase". And then there are the paragraphs I have no memory whatsoever of writing. They're usually ones I find good, so the strangeness doubles: it's like someone I don't know scribbled five or six lines in the middle of the story when my figurative back was turned.

The past really is a foreign country, but sometimes you have a faded map.

Note 2: many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon for both help and cheerleading.
Note 3: slightly AU in that I've taken some liberties with regards to where Legolas settles after the War of the Ring.

Dazzled )
I've seen the film twice so far, once at the midnight premiere at midnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, and once on Thursday. The former in HFR 3D and the latter in 2D.

Right now, I'm too frazzled to attempt a coherent review (and I suck at them anyway), so here's a condensed version: thrilling, funny and dark by turns and really not a lot like the book even if most of what's in there is from some part of the wider canon. This isn't to say I didn't like it, not at all. I can deal with the deviations (that a lot of purists have found very grating - which is okay, they're entitled to their opinion), even if some of them confuse me a little, and I'll do the same thing as I did with AUJ and the LotR trilogy: give them their own place next to the book.

And now, to avoid sounding too serious, some things I loved:
- the visuals. The sets are gorgeous, and the sense of space you get in HFR 3D is amazing. Half of the reason I went to see it again so soon was that I wanted to catch all the little things I missed during the first viewing, which I spent gazing starry-eyed at the spectacle unfolding. *g*
- SMAUG.
- Mirkwood, particularly the sense of tarnished beauty that's slowly decaying.

... and hell, I didn't even find Tauriel all that annoying.
I cried, I giggled, I gasped with both amazement and surprise. And the 3D was nice, not too obtrusive and still impressive.

Also: Oh, Loki. LOKI. Where do I even begin, you eternal trickster? ♥

(Also: Hobbit trailer #1 during previews. FHSjghsjkghs it's so pretty in 3D.)

Things that make me sad: the fact that [livejournal.com profile] yuletide no longer makes me excited. Now I just feel worried and anxious and guilty when the brainstorming and signup posts go up. Why? Because it reminds me of how badly I've lost faith in my skills. Logically, I know I haven't suddenly turned into the worst writer in the world, but it doesn't help. The little voice in the back of my head that says "There are a thousand new writers and they're all cleverer than you and they all know the fandom better than you" keeps getting louder when it should be getting weaker. It makes me feel old, too, because not being able to be excited over challenges and new fandoms also makes me feel like I can't keep up with fandom. Everything moves so fast, and everything is ficced/vidded/capped/gifsetted/meta'd within what feels like seconds. And I stand there thinking "Oh. I've already missed the train on new stuff and can't do anything with it/inspired by it because it's old hat by now", and for some inexplicable reason it makes me feel nervous and inadequate.

I feel old. And out of touch. And like I'm on the outside looking in. And like I should just shut up instead of complaining about non-issues.

My journal turns twelve today. TWELVE. And it still feels like it's only been a few years, like Lotrips (in all its crazy, wanky, brilliant glory) only slowed down last year or so. But even that was ten years ago.

It's been twelve lovely years, and I've met (most online but some RL as well) so many fantastic people and now I almost feel a little choked up. Wistful, certainly.

Twelve years. WTF.

Just a quick note to say that yes, I'm still alive and that I'm trying to work my way through comments that I need to reply to (because ack, I suck at replying to them in a timely manner and I apologize for that) and challenge fics I need to repost.

I also want to thank the lovely people who left me notes on the VDSA. ♥ ♥ ♥ They really brightened my day.

In other news: life continues to be a series of ups and downs (I could do with less downs, though). At least the days are getting brighter.
